I hate to subscribe to stereotypes, but she would've been harder to take seriously as a rebel leader if she were blonde. They would've had to have made her twice as bitchy in her princess role and twice as fierce in her general role to pull off being an effective leader.
Just look at Samus Aran.. she had to wear armor and kick all kinds of ass because she was blonde.
